Bagiński, Zbigniew (EN)

Biography and Literature

Bagiński Zbigniew, *19 January 1949 Szczecin, †24 August 2024 Warsaw, Polish composer. In 1967–71, he studied composition at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw with T. Paciorkiewicz. In 1989, he took over the composition class at the Academy of Music in Warsaw. He cooperated with the PWST in Warsaw, and in 1973–74, he collaborated with the Institute of Musicology of the Catholic University of Lublin. Since 1989, he had been the secretary general of the ZKP. Winner of many composition competitions, including: in 1973 he received a distinction at the Young Composers’ Competition for Journeys to the Other Side, 1992 – 3rd prize at the international composition competition in Kyiv for Threnody, 1995 – 1st prize at the competition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Polish Composers’ Union for Little Elegiac Symphony.

Bagiński’s creative output consists primarily of chamber and symphonic music. The main determinant of Bagiński’s style is his attitude to form. Repetition dominates as a means of shaping, with a specific anti-development approach. The free flow of time, related to, among others, the repetition of long sections, the sound uniformity of the whole and the subdued instrumental colours create a specific atmosphere of the songs. Repetition in the essentially one-movement form of the Trio with a coda is based on the use of variants (but not in the sense of a classic motivic work), which constitute a factor integrating the form and influencing the expression of the piece. Bagiński’s anti-processing music is especially represented by: Piano Quartet, Canons, scherzos, epigrams… and Nocturne-Lullaby. In works from the 1990s, the melodic factor and harmonics approaching classical approaches become more important (Little Elegiac Symphony, Piano Concerto).
