Biography

Arklowa Teresa, née Blumenfeld, *1861 Lviv, †July 1929 Milan, Polish singer (soprano). Educated at the conservatory in Lviv, in 1884 she debuted in her hometown on the opera stage in Meyerbeer’s Huguenots. In 1884–86, she performed in Kraków and Lviv. Then she achieved numerous successes abroad, especially in Italian theatres and at the Teatro Real in Madrid, where, among others, she took part in the premiere of the opera Doña Juana la Loca by E. Serrana. In 1891, she made her debut at La Scala in Milan as Venus in Wagner’s Tannhäuser; in 1892, she played the title role in Bellini’s Norma and the role of Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello on this stage. From 1896, she performed mainly on Spanish and South American stages, occasionally in Italy; in 1898, she sang in Lviv, and in 1899 in Warsaw and Kraków. In 1900, she settled in Milan, where she ran a singing school, gaining the fame of a great teacher. Her students included, among others, E. Brońska, C. Dux and L. Korsoff. In 1903–05, she recorded several albums in Milan for the G&T and Fonotipia companies.
