Biography

Altberg Emma, *14 January 1889 Płock, †4 July 1983 Warsaw, Polish pianist, teacher, publicist. She studied social sciences and philosophy in Switzerland. She studied piano at the Schola Cantorum in Paris in 1909–14 with B. Selva, completing them in St. Petersburg, and in 1926 and 1928 at early music interpretation courses at St-Leu-La Forêt near Paris with W. Landowska and in Paris with P. Brunold. In 1915–39, she worked as a teacher, pianist, and publicist (music reviews in “Express Poranny” in 1931–39). During World War II, she taught in Vilnius. From 1945, she was a lecturer, and in 1956–61 a professor of piano and harpsichord and piano teaching methodology at the State Higher School of Music (PWSM) in Łódź; at the same time, she was associated with other music schools. She published many collections of exercises and songs commonly used as material included in the compulsory curriculum. Awarded, among others, Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
