Biography and Literature

Buchholtz Julian, *1820 Warsaw, †after 1846, Polish builder of grand pianos, son of Fryderyk. He practised with his father and, among others, in Vienna, Paris and London. In 1841 he contacted Pleyel through F. Chopin. Around 1841–46, he ran a factory of his father’s company, which he took over from his mother after reaching the age of maturity. He introduced piano production. The company began to gradually decline. In 1845, they exhibited decorative pianos at the Industrial Exhibition in Warsaw, which included pianos with the mechanics of Roley system and pianos with the mechanics of Erard system. The instruments were rated rather negatively (some were already pledged for debt). Eventually, the factory was closed down around 1846. Buchholtz’s piano is located in the Hunting Palace in Antonin.
