Biography

Schneider, Johann Gottlob, *28 October 1789 Altgersdorf (now Neugersdorf), †13 April 1864 Dresden, German organist, teacher and composer, brother of Friedrich. He studied with his father, then was an organist at the university church in Leipzig, and in 1812–25 at the church of St. Peter and Paul in Görlitz. From 1825 until the end of his life, he served as court organist in Dresden. Considered one of the most outstanding organ playing virtuosos of his time, he made great contributions to the popularisation of the organ works of J.S. Bach. His younger brother Johann Gottlieb Schneider (1797–1856) was an organist, among others, from 1825 in the church of St. Cross in Jelenia Góra.
