Holmes Henry, *7 November 1839 London, †9 December 1905 San Francisco, English violinist and composer, brother of Alfred. Until 1865, his artistic path completely coincided with his brother’s career. In 1865 – after an independent trip to Scandinavia – he returned to London, where in 1868, he organised very popular chamber music concerts, at which he performed as a member of a string quartet. In 1883, he became a professor of violin at the newly established Royal College of Music. In 1894, he moved to San Francisco, where he worked as a violin professor until his death. His few surviving compositions include two cantatas, a concert overture, four symphonies, a violin concerto, chamber works and works for violin and piano, and songs. He also arranged sonatas by Corelli, Tartini and Bach.
