Biography and Literature

Turowska Maria, Marianna, married Stolpe, *15 July 1820 near Wieluń, †5 (not: 4) September 1885 Kłodzienko (district Żółkiew, Lviv Oblast) Polish singer (soprano), sister of Józefa. She was a student of K. Kurpiński at the Singing School at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw. She made her debut on 17 June 1837 as Elvira in G. Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers [“L’italiana in Algeri”] with her sister Josephine. She also sang in operas by G. Donizetti, V. Bellini and G. Meyerbeer receiving good reviews. In 1840 she married E. Stolpe. On 1 September 1841 she ended her stage career. In 1851 and from 1856 to 1862 she worked with her husband at the Alexandria Institute for the Education of Ladies in Puławy. Józefa and Maria together with their siblings, Seweryn and Waleria, co-founded a vocal quartet that gave concerts, among other places, in Warsaw in 1835 (cantata by I.F. Dobrzyński). Seweryn († September or October 1837 Warsaw) was a participant in the November Uprising, clerk at the Bank Polski, also a singer (bass) who appeared in church choirs and was a member of the orchestra of the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw. Waleria, married name Bonfis (†after 1852), was a singer.
