Biography

Thibaudet Jean-Yves, *7 September 1961 Lyon, French pianist. He studied piano with his mother and at the conservatory in Lyon. He made his first public appearance when he was 7 years old. In 1973–76, he studied piano at the conservatory in Paris with L. Descaves, R. Gianoli and A. Ciccolini (finished with the 1st prize). In 1978, he won second prize in the G.B. Viotti competition in Vercelli. In 1981, he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions competition in New York. From 1989, he performed in Great Britain (including in 1992 at the BBC Proms festival). In 1993, he made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York. Since then, he has gone on numerous world tours, performing in prestigious concert halls (in 2005 and 2006 again at Carnegie Hall). Contracted with Decca, he recorded, among others, concertos by S. Rachmaninoff (No. 1 and No. 3, 1996), works by M. Ravel, C. Debussy, E. Satie (The Complété Solo Piano Music, 2003), as well as D. Ellington, L. Bernstein and M. Legrand (1997). As a chamber musician, he has performed and recorded, among others, with R. Fleming, C. Bartoli, Rossetti String Quartet and J. Bell and Takács Quartet (Concerto in D major for piano, violin and string quartet by E. Chausson, 2005). In 2001, Thibaudet received the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
