Szulc, Bronisław (EN)

Biography

Szulc Bronisław, *24 December 1881 Warsaw,  †17 July 1955 Tel Aviv, Polish horn player, conductor and composer, son of Henryk Szulc. He studied composition with Z. Noskowski and horn playing with I. Malinowski at the Music Institute in Warsaw. In 1899–1908, he played in the orchestra of the Grand Theatre in Warsaw. In 1909–11, he continued his studies in Leipzig under the supervision of H. Riemann (music theory) and A. Nikisch (conducting). From 1911, he worked as a conductor in Warsaw, Rostov-on-Don (1912–13), Łódź (from 1916), Liverpool (1923), Riga and the United States. He also performed as a soloist and chamber musician (in a wind quintet) on Polish Radio. In 1936, he emigrated to Palestine, where he took up the position of conductor of the Tel Aviv Symphony Orchestra (until 1955). He composed two symphonic poems and pieces for violin and cello with piano accompaniment (including Humoresque Op. 8 for cello and piano).
