Biography

Strobel Janusz, *13 November 1947 Gdańsk, Polish guitarist and composer. He comes from a family with a musical tradition. Graduated from the State Music School (violin) and Secondary Music School (guitar) in Gdańsk; during his studies he performed in music clubs in the Tricity. In 1969, he moved to Warsaw, where he played in Piwnica Wandy Warskiej, Big Band “Stodoła”, and accompanied soloists in the Song Club of the Association of Polish Authors and Composers ZAKR. In 1971, he formed, with guitarist H. Alber, the Alber-Strobel Classical Guitar Duo (Henryk Alber & Janusz Strobel 1972, Duet Gitar Klasycznych Alber-Strobel 1976). After its disbanding, in 1986, he performed as a soloist (Dindi 1986). In addition, he gave concerts with his brother, Mark Strobel (double bassist), in jazz clubs in Western Europe. In 1987, together with K. Woliński (guitarist), he formed a band Strobel-Woliński Quartet (Just Quartet 1987). Moreover, in 1991, he established his own trio with P. Biskupski and M. Bogdanowicz (the album Janusz Strobel 1992). He cooperated with W. Nahorny, as well as with E. Adamiak, H. Banaszak (Koncert 1993), E. Bem, E. Geppert, Ł. Prus, R. Rynkowski, I. Santor, among others. Strobel is a composer of jazz themes, instrumental, film and theatre music.
