Biography

Monteux Claude, *15 October 1920 Brookline (Massachusetts), †22 February 2013 Sacramento (California), American conductor and flautist, Pierre’s son. He studied flute with G. Laurent. In 1940 he made his debut as a soloist. In 1946, he became a flutist in the Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1949 he began his conducting career, working with the Ballets Russes. He has guest conducted the London Symphony Orchestra and the German, French, Dutch, and Scandinavian orchestras. In the years 1953–1956, he was associated with the Columbus (Ohio) Symphony Orchestra. Monteux was music director of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic Orchestra from 1959 to 1975. He held conducting master classes with the Canadian National Youth Orchestra. He also practised chamber music; in the years 1947–1954 he was a member of the Harpsichord Quartet. He performed as a soloist under the baton of his father. They also made recordings together. As a flautist, he was distinguished by his brilliant technique and the elegance of his playing.
