Messal Lucyna, real name Lucyna Mischal, married name Kobielew, Sztukowska, *16 October 1886 Warsaw, †10 December 1953 Warsaw, Polish operetta singer (soprano) and dancer. She was a student of S. Bogucki, H. Leszczyńska and J. Reszke. After an unsuccessful performance in Warsaw in 1904, further studies and a long tour of Ukraine, she made her debut in March 1909 in Warsaw as Saffi in J. Strauss’s The Gypsy Baron, soon becoming, alongside W. Kawecka, the leading Polish operetta prima donna. With her excellent acting skills, she developed a new type of operetta soloist, breaking with the existing pattern of poses and central situations on stage. Her most famous roles included Eurydice in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, Lucy in Jacobi’s Leányvásár, the title roles in Léhar’s Eva and Gilbert’s Die keusche Susanne. She made guest appearances on stages in Moscow, St Petersburg, Odessa, Kiev, and in 1927 also in Czechoslovakia. She was one of the first artists to promote tango in Poland.
