Marchesi, Mathilde
Marchesi Blanche, *4 April 1863 Paris, †15 December 1940 London, French singer (soprano) and teacher, daughter of Salvatore and Mathilda Marchesi. She learned singing from her mother. She made her debut in 1900 in Prague as Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Die Walküre. She travelled throughout Europe with the Moody-Manners Opera Company. From 1896, she settled in London, where she performed as a concert singer (until 1938) and gave singing lessons. She published memoirs entitled A Singer’s Pilgrimage (London 1923, reprint 1977) and textbook, The Singer’s Catechism (London 1932).
