Biography

Levasseur Jean Henri, *29 May 1764 Beaumont-sur-Oise, †6 May 1826 Paris, French cellist and teacher. He was taught to play the cello by J.B. Cupis and J.L. Duport. In 1782–1820, Levasseur played in the orchestra of the Paris Opera, also as a soloist; he was also a member of the imperial and later royal band. Co-author of Méthode de violoncelle et de basse d’accompagnement (Paris 1804), a work obligatory at the conservatory, where he taught in 1795–1826. His students included A. Franchomme. Levasseur published etudes, duets and sonatas for cello. His brother, Pierre François Levasseur (1753–1816), also a cellist, is the author of 12 cello duets, published in Paris.
