Lehmann, Liza (EN)

Biography

Lehmann Liza, actually Elizabeth Nina Mary Frederica Lehmann, *11 July 1862 London, †19 September 1918 Pinner (Middlesex), English singer (soprano) and composer. She was educated by her mother, Amelia Lehmann; then her teachers were A. Randegger and J. Lind (singing) in London and W. Freudenberg (Wiesbaden) and H. MacCunn (London) in composition. Having no predispositions to perform on the opera stage, she successfully practised the recital form (1885–94). After marrying the painter and composer H. Bedford, she devoted herself to composition. She created stage works (including the operas The Vicar of Wakefield 1906 and Everyman 1915) and vocal works (including In a Persian Garden by O. Khayyam), which enjoyed considerable popularity. In 1911–12, she was the first president of the Society of Women Musicians and taught singing at the Guildhall School of Music. She is the author of Practical Hints for Students of Singing and the interesting memoir The Life of Liza Lehmann by herself (London 1919).
