Biography

Klengel Julius, *24 September 1859 Leipzig, †27 October 1933 Leipzig, German cellist and composer, brother of Paul. He studied with E. Hegar and S. Jadassohn (theory and composition). From 1874 he was a member, and from 1881 to 1924 the first cellist, of the Gewandhaus Orchestra [Gewandhausorchester]. At the same time, he was a member of the Gewandhaus Quartet, in which he played until 1930, in the last years of his activity alternating with H. Münch-Holland. He performed as a pianist. He was a lecturer (from 1889 professor) at the Leipzig Conservatory; he educated many well-known cellists, including E. Feuermann, P. Grümmer, G. Piatigorsky. Julius Klengel, was one of the most prominent German virtuoso cellists, was distinguished by his excellent interpretation of classical music, based on a thorough knowledge of forms and styles. He composed mainly cello works (4 concertos, 2 concertos for 2 cellos, 2 double concertos for violin and cello and solo works), in addition to chamber compositions and works for string and symphony orchestra.
