Hotteterre, Haulteterre, Hauterre, Hautetère, Hoterre, Obterre, Opterre and others, Martin, *ca. 1640, †1712, A French maker of woodwind instruments and son of Jean, he was proficient on all woodwind instruments; he was particularly renowned as a virtuoso on the musette, the design of which he improved by introducing an additional key that allowed the instrument to produce a full chromatic scale. He joined the circle of royal musicians after 1660; from around 1664 he was a member of the Grands Hautbois du Roi, and from 1667 he was employed in the Hautbois et Musettes de Poitou ensemble, which formed part of the Musique de la Grande Ecurie. Two of Hotteterre’s works have survived: Marche du régiment de Surlaube (in his son Jacques’s Méthode pour la musette…) and Air des hautbois (manuscript in the library at Versailles).
