Hill Richard S., *25 September 1901 Chicago, †7 February 1961 Naples (Florida), American musicologist, library scientist. He studied psychology at various American universities (including under K. Koffka from 1927 to 1929) and, in 1929, musicology at Cornell University in Ithaca under O. Kinkeldey, whilst also working there as a psychologist. In 1939, he joined the music division of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and soon became head of the division’s information section. In 1943, he took over as editor of the journal “Notes” (published by the Music Library Association of America). Towards the end of his life, Hill was actively involved in the preparatory work for RISM. He was a member of the American Musicological Society and the International Association of Music Libraries (serving as president from 1951 to 1955).
