Górzyńska Barbara, *4 December 1953 Ćmielów, Polish violinist and teacher. She began learning music at the age of 5 under the supervision of her father and continued in the violin class of the State Music School of the 1st and 2nd degree in Łódź (1960–72) and in 1972–77 at the State Higher School of Music in Łódź (currently the Academy of Music) under the supervision of W. Semiotuk and Z. Płoszaja. She participated in several violin competitions: 1st Young Violin Competition (Lublin 1970 – 1st prize), 6th H. Wieniawski International Competition. (Poznań 1972 – 3rd prize), Humla Competition (Zagreb 1977 – 1st prize and special award of H. Szeryng), C. Flesch International Competition (London 1980 – 1st prize). She made her debut at the age of 16 with F. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor with WOSPR conducted by B. Wodiczko, and since then she has performed with leading Polish orchestras, as well as, among others, with the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra. She has performed all over the world, including: in Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Spain, former Yugoslavia, Cuba, Mexico, Germany, Sweden, Hungary, Italy, Great Britain, former USSR. She has a rich repertoire of 18th–20th-century pieces, including compositions by G. Bacewicz, K. Szymanowski, and H. Wieniawski. She has made numerous recordings, including: for Polish Radio, Westdeutscher Rundfunk and BBC Radio. As a teacher, she initially worked (from 1980) at the Academy of Music in Łódź, in 1991–94 at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Graz, and since 1994 she has been teaching the violin class at the Prayner Konservatorium für Musik und Dramatische Kunst in Vienna.
