Biography

Germani Fernando, *5 April 1906 Rome, †10 June 1998 Rome, Italian organist. He studied at the Accademia di S. Cecilia in Rome (piano, theory, composition) and at the Istituto di Musica Sacra (organ, Gregorian chant); he learned organ performance under R. Manari. In 1921 he became organist of the Augusteo Orchestra, and in 1927 he began performing as a soloist. In 1932 he took charge of the organ class at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena; in 1935 he became a professor at the Accademia di S. Cecilia in Rome, and from 1939 also a professor at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. In 1934 he undertook his first tour of the United States; from 1936 to 1938 he taught organ at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. From 1948 to 1959 he served as the principal organist of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He participated in numerous international festivals, including those in Schaffhausen, Lucerne, Nuremberg, Berlin, and Edinburgh, and performed widely across Europe and the United States. His repertoire included all the organ works of J.S. Bach; he also gained recognition as an interpreter of works by Franck and Reger.
