Biography

Georgiades Thrasybulos Georgios, *4 January 1907 Athens, †15 March 1977 Munich, German musicologist of Greek origin. In 1928 he graduated in engineering from the Polytechnic in Athens; he also received musical education at the Odeon, the Athens Conservatory. In 1930–35 he studied musicology at the University of Munich under R. von Ficker, obtaining his doctorate in 1935 on the basis of a dissertation on English discant. In 1931–35 he studied under C. Orff, and in 1947 he completed his habilitation at the University of Munich. In 1936–41 he was professor of music, later director of the Odeon in Athens. From 1949 he was professor of musicology at the University of Heidelberg, and from 1955 in Munich; he initiated the series «Münchner Veröffentlichungen zur Musikgeschichte».

Georgiades is the author of works distinguished by their methodological and philosophical originality, devoted to Greek music, the theory of musical rhythm, the relationship between speech and music, and problems of musical interpretation; he also studied the music of the Viennese classics and the songs of Franz Schubert.
