Gazzelloni, Severino (EN)

Biography

Gazzelloni Severino *5 January 1919 Roccasecca (Frosinone), †21 November 1992 Cassino, Italian flautist. In 1942 he graduated from the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he studied under A. Tassinari. In 1945 he made his debut as a virtuoso flautist; he soon became a professor at the Conservatorio di Musica “Gioachino Rossini” in Pesaro and principal flautist of the RAI Symphony Orchestra in Rome. He gave masterclasses in flute performance at the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia in Rome, at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music, at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Cologne, the Summer School of Music in Darlington, the Kurshus in Stockholm, the University of Jyväskylä in Helsinki, and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. Gazzelloni’s repertoire included nearly the entire flute literature from the Baroque to contemporary music; however, he became especially renowned as an outstanding interpreter of avant-garde works. Thanks to his remarkable and original playing technique, he opened up new possibilities for composers in the use of the flute in modern music; works were written specifically for him by composers such as G. Petrassi, L. Nono, B. Maderna, W. Szalonek, and R. Haubenstock-Ramati. During his many concert tours, he visited Poland three times to perform at the Warsaw Autumn Festival (1959, 1961, 1963).
