Fogliano, Giacomo (EN)

Biography and literature

Fogliano Giacomo (Jacobo), *1468 Modena, †10 April 1548 Modena, composer and organist. Between 1489–97 and 1504–48, he was organist at Modena Cathedral. In 1515, he remained in the service of Cardinal d’Este. He also served as an expert in organ construction. As an organist, Fogliano was highly regarded by his contemporaries. He was the older brother of Lodovico Fogliano, a theorist and composer.

Fogliano’s work represents an important stage in the development of musical forms. He was one of the first composers to use imitative texture in organ ricercar.
