Biography

Florjański, Floriański, Floryański, Władysław, born Florian Koman or Kohmann, *4 May 1854 Lviv, †11 April 1911 Lviv, Polish tenor and stage director. He studied, among others, under A. Souvestre. On 6 January 1884 he made his debut at the Lviv theatre in K. Millöcker’s operetta Der Bettelstudent, adopting the stage name Florjański. On 26 February 1885, at the premiere of Konrad Wallenrod by W. Żeleński, he performed the title role and established himself as an outstanding operatic singer. In September 1886 he went to Prague, where for over ten years he was one of the leading soloists of the Národní divadlo. He made guest appearances in Vienna, Berlin, St. Petersburg, and Hamburg, and also performed frequently at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, where from 1898 he became a permanent member of the company and from 1902 also worked as a stage director. In the 1906/07 season he took up work at the Lviv Opera, where he remained until the end of his life. In 1907 he toured the United States.
