Fesch, Willem de (EN)

Biography

Fesch Willem de, also de Veg, de Feghg, du Feche, Defesch, baptised 26 August 1687 Alkmaar (North Holland), †3 January 1761 London, Dutch composer and violinist.

From around 1710 to 1725, he lived in Amsterdam and worked as a teacher and violinist, giving several concerts in Antwerp (1718, 1719, 1722). Between 1725 and 1730, or 1731, he served as the cathedral’s Kapellmeister in Antwerp, succeeding A. d’Eve. In 1732, he settled permanently in London, where he soon became a highly regarded violin teacher and composer. Several of his stage works were performed in London theatres. In 1746, he took part (as first violinist) in the premiere performance of G.F. Handel’s Occasional Oratorio, and from 1748 he conducted the Marylebone Gardens orchestra. There is no information regarding his later life.

Fesch’s sonatas and songs gained great popularity not only in England but also in many other European countries, as evidenced by their numerous reprints. In his sonatas, Fesch underwent a fairly marked development in his compositional style, moving from virtuoso pieces influenced by the masters of the Italian Baroque to works of greater expressive depth revealing the influence of Handel.
