Biography

Fayolle François Joseph Marie, *15 August 1774 Paris, †2 December 1852 Paris, French music writer. He received his education at the École des Ponts et Chaussées and the École Polytechnique. From 1815 to 1829 he lived in London, and from 1830 in Paris. For many years he worked as a music critic, collaborating with, among others, the English journal “Harmonicon” and the French “Magasin Encyclopédique.” He published numerous articles on musical topics, including in the literary booklets he edited, “Les Quatre Saisons du Parnasse” (16 issues, Paris 1805–09). Together with A. Choron, he published Dictionnaire historique des musiciens (2 vols., Paris 1810–11), a work largely based on a translation of the lexicon by E. L. Gerber.
