Biography

Espinosa Guillermo, *9 January 1905 Cartagena, †5 July 1990?, A Colombian conductor. He studied music in Cartagena, Milan, Berlin, and Basel under the guidance of F. Weingartner. In 1928, he founded the Fremdes-Symphonieorchester in Berlin. From 1932 to 1946, he worked in Colombia; he founded (1936) and conducted the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Bogotá. From 1947 he lived in Washington, D.C.; in 1953, he became director of the Division of Music at the Pan American Union, in 1956 secretary-general of the Inter-American Music Council, and in 1970 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Cartagena. Espinosa undertook numerous concert tours throughout Europe and North and South America; he participated in and co-organized international music festivals in Caracas, Bogotá, Cartagena, Washington, D.C., Madrid, and Rome. He is primarily recognized as a promoter of Latin American music.
