Biography and literature

Engel Carl, *21 July 1883 Paris, †6 May 1944 New York, American librarian, musical writer and publisher. He studied composition at the University of Strasbourg and under L. Thuille in Munich.

In 1905, he settled in the USA. From 1909 to 1921, he was a publisher and musical adviser at Boston Music Co. From 1922 to 1934, he was head of the music division at the Library of Congress in Washington. From 1929, he was editor of “The Musical Quarterly”; from 1929 to 1932 and from 1934 to 1944, he was president of the G. Schirmer publishing company in New York; from 1937 to 1938, he served as president of the American Musicological Society.

He published articles in “The Musical Quarterly” and was also a composer. He was awarded the French Legion of Honour. The 60th anniversary of his birth was marked by the publication of a commemorative volume.
