Egli Johann Heinrich, *4 March 1742 Seegräben (near Zurich), †19 December 1810 Zurich, Swiss composer. He studied singing, piano and composition with Johannes Schmidlin, and furthered his musical knowledge by independently studying the theoretical works of J.P. Kirnberger, F.W. Marpurg and C.P.E. Bach. Egli spent his entire life in Zurich, where he worked as a highly regarded teacher of singing and piano, and also played the violin in an orchestra. He composed many songs, mainly sacred ones (published in the 18th century); some of them remained in the repertoire of the Evangelical Church well into the 20th century. Egli was one of Switzerland’s leading song composers.
