Drège-Schielowa, Łucja (EN)

Biography

Drège-Schielowa Łucja, *13 February 1893 Warsaw, †26 January 1962 Łódź, Polish pianist and composer After finishing her musical studies under F. Szopski (composition) and M. Wąsowska-Badowska (piano) in 1915 at the Warszawskie Towarzystwo Muzyczne, she became active as a composer. Furthermore, in the inter-war years she became known as a pianist-cameralist and organiser of popular musical events. After World War II, she settled in Łódź, where she taught theoretical subjects in PŚSM (State Secondary Music School) from 1945, and from she worked as illustrator and pianist of dance and ballet ensembles.

Drège-Schielowa composed primarily works for children, so the composer’s rigorous treatment of musical form stems from didactic assumptions. Drège-Schielová’s work stems from the neo-Romantic tradition, particularly the musical style of Brahms. Many of her songs were performed on stage and by Polish Radio, including A. Argasińska, E. Bandrowska-Turska, M. Janowski, S. Korwin-Szymanowska. Most of the works remained in manuscripts (with family, performers, in the archives of the Polish Radio and other institutions).
