Biography

Dauberval, D’Auberval, D’Oberval, born Jean Bercher *19 August 1742 Montpellier, †14 February 1806 Tours, French dancer and choreographer. From 1762 to 1764, he performed as the principal dancer in Stuttgart; from 1764 to 1770, he worked in London; and from 1761 to 1783, he was active at the Paris Opera as premier danseur demi-caractère, from 1770 as premier danseur noble, and from 1771 also as ballet master. He left the Opera following a dispute with P. Gardel. Between 1785 and 1791, he worked as a choreographer in Bordeaux, and in 1790–91 in London. As a dancer, Dauberval was noted for his virtuosity and his talent in the semi-character style; as a choreographer, he followed the theories of Noverre, especially excelling in sentimental and comic themes. His students included S. Viganò, Ch.-L. Didelot, J.-P. Aumer, and C. Blasis.
