Dahlig Piotr, *18 April 1953 Warsaw, Polish ethnomusicologist, and historian of music culture. He studied in Institute of Musicology of the University of Warsaw in 1972–77, where he was an assistant lecturer in 1977–83; in 1983 he obtained a doctorate degree with a doctoral thesis entitled Świadomość muzyczna wykonawców ludowych w Polsce. Pojęcia formy, funkcji i wartości. He has been working at the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences since 1999, where he obtained his habilitation and instructorship; while managing the Marian Sobieski Phonographic Archive, he expanded audio and visual documentation of Polish folclore on a large-scale, which provided him with the basis for multifaceted research He returned to the Institute of Musicology of the University of Warsaw in 2000, where he became the head of the Ethnomusicology Unit after A. Czekanowska. His scientific interests include the issues of folk music instruments; traditional musical culture (especially of displaced persons), music and the amateur-theatre movement. Original attempt to characterise musical culture by analysing the consciousness of its carriers taken by Dahlig deserves particular attention. His lengthy workTradycje muzyczne a ich przemiany is a valuable monograph of Polish musical culture in the interwar period. Dahling’s work comprehensively considers Polish folk, popular and professional music, also presents history of research, the function of folklore and its meaning for the development of musical output and the amateur movement; gives a broad overview of music education, music festivals, broadcasting activities.
