Cherici, Chierici, Clerici, Sebastiano, *20 January 1647, Pistoia, †13 November 1703, Pistoia, Italian clergyman, composer. He studied in Bologna under G.P. Colonna, after which he was associated with the Accademia della Morte in Ferrara as a musico soprano from at least 1667. In 1670, he became the maestro di cappella of the cathedral choir, with which he was associated until 1680. He remained in Ferrara until 1695, with the exception of the period at the turn of 1675/76, when he was employed as Hofkappelmeister in Dresden. In the years 1686–88, he maintained contacts with the Accademia Filarmonica in Bologna. From 1672 until the end of his stay in Ferrara, he was also associated with the Accademia della Compagnia dello Spirito Sancto. From his return to Pistoia in 1695 until the end of his life, he served as maestro di cappella of the local cathedral choir.
Stylistically, Cherici’s work belongs to the Bolognese school of the second half of the 17th century. These are mainly works of church music. The operas he composed in his later years have survived without music.
