Biography

Carvalho Marie Caroline, actually Carvaille, née Félix-Miolan, *31 December 1827 Marseille, †10 July 1895 Château Puys, French soprano.

She was a student of G. Duprez at the Paris Conservatory. After a successful debut (1849) in G. Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor (Paris Opera), she performed successively at the Opéra Comique, the Théâtre Lyrique (1855–66), at the Opéra (1868–83), and again at the Opéra Comique (last performance in 1885) in Paris. She created leading roles in the premieres of Gounod’s operas (Faust, Philémon et Baucis, Mireille, Romeo and Juliet) and also sang on opera stages in London, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Brussels among other places. She was the wife of Léon Carvaille (known as Carvalho), a renowned impresario and long-time director of Parisian opera houses.
