Canobbio, Cannobbio, Carlo, *1741 Venice (?), †7 March (23 February) 1822 St Petersburg, Italian composer and violinist. From 1773 to 1775 he was concertmaster at the Teatro S. Samuele in Venice; from 1779 to 1795 he served as first violinist and composer of ballet music at the court of Catherine II in St Petersburg, whilst also holding the post of concertmaster and director of the local Italian opera company from 1789. His ballets were staged in Venice, Bologna and St Petersburg. From 1796, he directed performances by G. Astarita’s comic opera company, which was touring Russia.
