Biography and literature

Cabezón Hernando, baptized 7 September 1541 Madrid, †1 October 1602 Valladolid; son of Antonio; composer and organist. He served as organist at the cathedral in Sigüenza; in 1566, he succeeded his father as court organist to Philip II and Philip III, a position he held until his death. He traveled extensively throughout Spain and other European countries with the royal court. In 1581–82, he resided in Lisbon.

Hernando collected and prepared for publication the compositions of his father, his uncle Juan, and his own in a collection titled Obras de música para tecla, arpa y yihuela… (Madrid 1578). In his will, drawn up in 1598, he also mentions two other prepared tablatures with similar content, as well as the work Compendio de musica de Hernando de Cabezón, which have not survived.
