Biography

Brandt Marianne, actually Marie Bischof, *12 September 1842 Vienna, †9 July 1921 Vienna, Austrian singer (mezzo-soprano, contralto). She studied at the Vienna Conservatory from 1862 to 1866 and then with P. Viardot-Garcia in Baden-Baden from 1869 to 1870. She made her debut in 1867 in Olomouc and later sang in Berlin (1868–1886), Bayreuth (1876, 1882) and London, among other places. In 1884, she appeared as Leonora in Beethoven’s Fidelio at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House and sang there for a number of seasons, being, among other things, the first female performer of Wagnerian parts (Fricia, Brangena, Erda) in America. From 1890, she worked as a teacher in Vienna.
