Bosse Gustav, *6 February 1884 Vienenburg, †27 August 1943 Regensburg, German music publisher, son of Leipzig music publisher Fritz Bosse, student of H. Riemann, A. Seidel, and C. Eitz. In 1912, he founded a publishing company in Regensburg. He printed exclusively books on music, which were published in the series «Deutsche Musikbücherei» until 1952. These were mainly textbooks and popular science publications, as well as source materials, including letters by J.S. Bach, H. Schütz, A. Bruckner, G.A. Lortzing, and O. Nicolai, writings by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the autobiography of K. Ditters von Dittersdorf, and many books devoted to A. Bruckner and H. Wolf. Bosse published several well-known series: in 1921–27, «Almanach der Deutschen Musikbücherei»; in 1927–49, «Von deutscher Musik»; from 1931, «Forschungsarbeiten des Musikwissenschaftlichen Instituts der Universität Leipzig»; in 1934 «Musikalische Romanen und Novellen», in 1938 «Kölner Beiträge zur Musikforschung», in 1940 «Regensburger Liebhaberdrucke», in 1941 «Neues Mozart Jahrbuch», in 1952 «Mitteilungsblatt der Musikalischen Jugend Deutschland» (since 1969 as “Neue Musikzeitung”), in 1955 «Forschungsbeiträge zur Musikwissenschaft», in 1965 «Studien zur Musikgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts», in 1969 «Regensburger Beiträge zur musikalisehen Volks- und Völkerkunde». Bosse also printed polemical works in the series «Neue Musikbücher» and «Von deutscher Musik». In 1929, he took over the “Zeitschrift für Musik” (founded by R. Schumann in 1834) from the Steingräber publishing house in Leipzig, which he transferred to the B. Schotts Söhne publishing house in Mainz in 1955. After Gustav Bosse’s death, the company was run by his brother Walter, and from 1946 by his nephew Bernhard (*8 December 1921, Berlin). In 1957, Gustav Bosse Verlag merged with Bärenreiter Verlag in Kassel, retaining the company’s name and publishing program. In 1960, Gustav Bosse Verlag was incorporated into the book division of Bärenreiter Verlag and focused on educational publications and publications on contemporary church music and folk music. At the same time, the publishing house began publishing music prints, especially contemporary chamber music.
