Biography and literature

Bomtempo João Domingos, *28 December 1775 Lisbon, †18 August 1842 Lisbon, Portuguese composer and pianist. He studied and performed in Paris and London. After returning to Lisbon, in 1820 he founded a philharmonic society, and in 1833 he became director of the newly established Royal Conservatory.

Bomtempo was the first Portuguese composer of symphonic music. His instrumental output is in the Classical style; his piano works show the influence of M. Clementi and J. B. Cramer.
