Biography

Bolet Jorge, *15 November 1914 Havana, †16 October 1990 Mountain View (California), American pianist of Cuban origin. In 1935, he graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and began his concert career, performing in South America, the United States, Europe, South Africa and Australia. In 1968, he became a professor of piano at Indiana University in Bloomington. He remained a professor of piano at Indiana University in Bloomington until 1977; in 1977, following the death of R. Serkin, whose assistant he had been from 1939 to 1942, he took over the piano class at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He became famous as a brilliant performer of 19th-century music (Chopin, Liszt); he also included contemporary works in his repertoire, including concertos by J. Marx and J. La Montaine, and N. Dello Joio’s Piano Sonata No. 3. In 1960, he appeared in a film directed by Ch. Vidor about Liszt, entitled Song without End, as D. Bogarde’s understudy.
