Billington, Elisabeth (EN)

Biography

Billington Elisabeth, née Weichsel, *1765 or 1768 London, †25 August 1818 Venice, English singer (soprano). She made her debut in 1783 in Dublin and sang at Covent Garden in London from 1786. After a scandal caused by the anonymous publication of Memoirs of Mrs. Billington (1792), which attacked her private life, she left London. From 1794, she performed in Naples, where G. Paisiello and F. Paer, among others, wrote new operas especially for her; she also sang in other Italian cities. Returning to London in 1801, she became a favourite of the English public. In 1806, she retired from the stage, performing only in concerts (for the last time in 1814).
