Biography

Beylin Paweł, *27 July 1926 Haarlem (The Netherlands), †13 August 1971 Warsaw, Polish philosopher, sociologist, music and literary critic. He studied sociology at the University of Warsaw under S. Ossowski, and philosophy under T. Kotarbiński and T. Kroński. In 1954–68, he lectured on philosophy and aesthetics at the State Higher School of Music and the State Higher School of Theatre in Warsaw; at the same time, he gave lectures and seminars at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Warsaw, and supervised research in this field. He initiated research in the field of the sociology of music in Poland. In 1952–58, he worked as an editor for “Przegląd Kulturalny,” and in 1969–71 for “Ruch Muzyczny.” He translated the works of H. Bergson and J.-P. Sartre into Polish. His most important writings are devoted to issues of cultural criticism, ethics, aesthetics, sociology, music and musical culture.
