Biography

Bertolusi, Bertholusius, Vincenzo, *Murano (near Venice), †l8 September 1608 Copenhagen, Italian composer and organist. He was probably educated in Venice, from where he arrived in 1595 as organist to the court of Sigismund III in Krakow. He remained at the Polish court until 1607, then moved to Copenhagen to the court of Christian IV. Three madrigals from his period in Italy are known, included in collective editions from 1577, 1584, and 1598. In Poland, he composed a collection of 29 polyphonic compositions dedicated to King Sigismund III: Sacrarum cantionum… liber primus (6–8, 10 voices, Venice 1601). Two other motets were included in V. Lilius’s collection Melodiae sacrae (Krakow 1604). Ten pieces from Sacrarum cantionum… were reprinted in the collections of A. Schadeus and E. Bodenschatz.
