Baculewski, Krzysztof (EN)

Biography

Baculewski Krzysztof, *26 December 1950 Warsaw, Polish composer. He studied composition with W. Rudziński at the State Higher School of Music in Warsaw (graduating in 1974) and furthered his studies in composition in Paris with O. Messiaen in 1975–76. He studied electroacoustic music at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (internship with P. Schaeffer). In 1977–80, he taught at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Warsaw. In 1980, he obtained a PhD in the Humanities from the University of Warsaw.  Since 1973, he has been a contributor to the journal “Ruch Muzyczny”, as well as to the periodicals “Studio” and “Klasyka”. Since 1982, he has been an assistant professor at the Faculty of Composition, Conducting and Music Theory at the Academy of Music in Warsaw, and a professor since 1998. He has won awards at composition competitions, including: 1985 – 2nd prize and distinction (no 1st prize was awarded) in the competition marking the 25th anniversary of the Poznań Music Spring festival for his Concerto for Orchestra and String Quartet No. 2, 1990 – 1st prize in the Warsaw Branch of the Polish Composers’ Union Competition for Antitheton I.

Initially, Baculewski focused his compositional interests on sonoristic issues: the search for new sounds and new articulatory possibilities for instruments (Is-Slottet, Meander). Then, the issue of form came to the fore, especially large-scale instrumental form (Concerto for Orchestra); polyphonic texture also took on an important role. Baroque inspirations play a significant role in Baculewski’s work (in Antitheton, the title itself refers to Affektenlehre). The opera Nowe Wyzwolenie based on S.I. Witkiewicz’s work is a separate entity, in which the music performed on stage (singers, percussion quartet, conductor) is accompanied by music for wind orchestra played from tape.

Baculewski is the author of works that constitute an attempt at a comprehensive, synthesising approach to Polish contemporary music (1939–74, 1945–84) in both historical and systematic terms. These works belong to fundamental musicological literature.
