Aurelianus Reomensis, 9th century, OSB. He probably came from western France. He wrote an extensive treatise Musica disciplina, based on the views of Boethius, Cassiodorus, and Isidore of Seville, among others (Scriptores ecclesiastici de musica sacra potissimum, vol. 1, St. Blasien 1784 I; L.A. Gushee The “Musica disciplina” of Aurelian of Réomé, 2 vols., Yale 1963). This treatise contains, among other things, comments on choral practice and the relationship between words and music in choral music. Chapter 8 of the treatise, constituting one of the earliest sources of information on the eight ecclesiastical modes, corresponds to the text of a fragment attributed to Alcuin.
