Andrews Julie, *1 October 1935 Walton-on-Thames, English singer and actress. She has performed on Broadway in New York since 1954, specialising in musical theatre. Andrews’ most famous role, which brought her international fame, is that of Eliza in F. Loewe’s My Fair Lady (around 1,500 performances in New York and London). She gained immense popularity through numerous appearances on radio and television (including roles in High Tor, Cinderella and Camelot) and in the films Mary Poppins (1964), The Sound of Music (1964) and Victor/Victoria (1982). Following an unsuccessful laryngectomy (1997), she focused on children’s entertainment. She appeared in films including The Princess Diaries (2001) and The Princess Diaries 2 (2004), and provided the narration for Enchanted (2007) and Bridgerton (2022). She is the author (together with her daughter Emily) of over 30 children’s books and directed the musical The Great American Mousical (2012, 2024). She received a Grammy Award for the album Julie Andrews’ Collection of Poems, Songs and Lullabies (2011) and was made a Dame in the year 2000.
