Musical Heritage in a New Format – presentation of the Polish Music Library portal at the 16th National Conference of Music Librarians under the theme „Musicalia in a changing library environment: integration, cooperation and harmony”
16th National Conference of Music Librarians
During this year’s conference, held from November 17 to 19 by the Institute of Musicology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, the Polish Music Publishing House (PWM) presented the Polish Music Library portal as well as activities related to the digitization and dissemination of PWM’s resources. Dr Magdalena Bartnikowska-Biernat, editor of PWM’s online encyclopedia, delivered a presentation entitled Musical Heritage in a New Format. On behalf of the PWM Edition, Elżbieta Jasińska-Jędrosz also gave a presentation on the preparation and publication of Szymanowski’s Sketches—a supplement to the complete works edition of the composer.
In her speech dr Magdalena Bartnikowska-Biernat discussed the main functionalities of the PBM portal, along with its sections and resources. She also outlined the objectives and portal’s development plans within the project „Digitization and Sharing of Digital Resources of the PWM Edition and the Polish Composers’ Union”.
The speaker presented how the portal provides modern access to archival materials and how – thanks to digital solutions – Polish musical heritage can be disseminated and function across various cultural environments: educational, academic, artistic and social. Particular interest was sparked by the plans for further development and modernization of the portal, including the expansion of the resources of the PBM online Encyclopedia and the digitization of articles from Ruch Muzyczny magazine.

The presentation was met with great interest from the participants, who emphasized the importance of the project in developing modern, widespread access to musical heritage in Poland. Participation in the conference provided an opportunity to promote the PBM portal among users who work with this type of resources and tools, and helped to disseminate information about the actions implemented as part of the PWM resurce digitization project.
