Today the musical world celebrates International Bagpipe Day. The instrument is mainly associated with Scotland and Ireland; however, its origins and history are much less obvious. Let’s take a look at a few facts about this fascinating instrument.

1. Bagpipes are a woodwind instrument (an aerophone), classified as complex reed pipes.
2. They are one of the oldest complex musical instruments, and are at least 2000 years old!
3. Their origins are unclear. They may originate from India or the Middle East (Sumer).
4. The earliest accounts of bagpipes in written sources date back to the Rome in the time of Nero (1st century AD).
5. This instrument consists of many parts, often with unusual names. For example, Podhale bagpipes include a bourdon pipe called “bąk”, a blowpipe (mouthpiece) called “duchac” and a chanter (melodic pipe) called “gajdzica”.
6. Bagpipes also exist in many different varieties and under many different names. Check them out for yourselves!
