It’s June so it’s time for the new Instrument of the Month – trombone.
It’s a brass instrument that has been developed since the 15th century. What distinguishes it from other mouthpiece aerophones is its characteristic slide used to change the pitch of the sound. Types of trombones can be divided based on their structure: slide or valve trombone; and based on their sound: soprano, alto, tenor-bass, tenor, bass and doppio trombone. The most popular are tenor and alto trombones. -> Information about the construction of this instrument and tips for beginner trombone players can be found in Pictures.
The trombone, next to saxophone and trumpet, plays an important role in jazz music. In classical music, it appears as a solo instrument in works from the 16th and 17th centuries. The trombone part can also be found in the works of W.A. Mozart, N. Rimsky-Korsakov, and D. Milhaud. What else? -> Check our sheet music collections.
