It’s high time for another Instrument of the Month. Our proposal for March is:
✔ Plucked string chordophone;
✔ Known already in antiquity;
✔ Consists of a body with a soundbox and 46–47 strings;
✔ It is the national instrument in Peru, Ireland and Paraguay;
➔ Harp.
Popularised thanks to the composer Georg Friedrich Handel, who included it in the symphony orchestra, and thanks to the Queen of France, Marie Antoinette – a talented harpist. Today, it is used not only in classical music but also in jazz.
It is widely known that the harp is a popular iconographic motif so it must be included in the Pictures section of the Polish Music Library. We invite owners of this angelic instrument to obtain sheet music materials from the Notes, and those interested in facts from the lives of harpists, as always, to the PWM Encyclopaedia online.
